Common toilet problems
- Running or refilling on its own (flapper, fill valve or flush valve)
- Water on the floor around the base (wax ring or flange)
- Rocking or loose toilet (flange or floor problem)
- Weak flush or frequent clogs
- Cracked tank or bowl
Three kinds of toilet leaks
WaterOne describes three common types (WaterOne: Leaks):
- Fill device: water overflows into the overflow tube. Lift the lid and listen.
- Phantom flush: a worn flapper lets water seep into the bowl until the tank refills by itself. The dye test catches it.
- Base seal: a failed seal between the toilet and floor. With a room below, it eventually damages the ceiling or floor framing.

Repair or replace?
Flappers, fill valves, flush valves and wax rings are routine repairs. A cracked bowl or tank means replacement. An older toilet that clogs constantly may simply have a poor flush design, and a modern high-efficiency model can use less water and clog less.
A toilet that rocks needs attention soon: the movement breaks the wax seal, and a slow leak under the toilet can damage the floor long before it’s visible.

Quick check: is your toilet leaking into the bowl?
Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank and don’t flush for 15–20 minutes. If color shows up in the bowl, the flapper or flush valve is leaking.
Choosing a new toilet
- Rough-in: measure from the wall to the center of the floor bolts. 12 inches is standard; 10 and 14 inches exist in some homes.
- Height: “comfort” or chair height is easier for many adults to use.
- Flush rating: WaterSense-labeled toilets use 1.28 gallons per flush or less and are tested for flush performance.
- Bowl shape: elongated bowls are more comfortable; round bowls fit tight bathrooms.

Toilet Repair & Replacement: common questions
Why does my toilet run randomly?
Usually a worn flapper letting water seep into the bowl until the fill valve tops the tank back up. The dye test confirms it.
How do I know if the wax ring is bad?
Water or staining around the base, a sewer smell in the bathroom, or a toilet that rocks are common signs.
How much water does a running toilet waste?
WaterOne estimates 1,400 to 2,800 gallons a day depending on the toilet’s age and the size of the leak.
