Garbage Disposal Repair & Replacement in Overland Park, KS

A disposal that hums but won’t spin is usually jammed. One that does nothing may have tripped its reset or lost power. One that leaks from the bottom is usually finished. We sort out which, and fix the kitchen drain while we’re there if the disposal has been feeding it debris.

Common disposal problems

  • Hums but doesn’t spin (jammed flywheel)
  • Completely dead (reset button, switch or circuit)
  • Leaking from the sink flange, the dishwasher inlet or the drain connection
  • Leaking from the bottom of the unit (internal seal failure, usually replacement)
  • Slow drain or backups in the kitchen sink

Safe things to try first

Turn the power off at the switch. Press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit. If it still hums, many disposals have a hex socket on the bottom for a wrench to free the flywheel. Never put your hand in the disposal.

Replacement

If the unit is leaking internally or is near the end of its life, we replace it, match the horsepower to how you use it, reconnect the dishwasher drain correctly, and test for leaks.

Keeping it (and your drain) healthy

  • Run cold water before, during and after use
  • Keep grease, fibrous peels and large amounts of starch out
  • Don’t use it as a trash can; it’s for scraps, not bulk waste
  • If your home is on septic, ask before adding a disposal; it adds solids to the tank

How it works

  1. Call or book. We help you stop the water first if needed, then give you an arrival window.
  2. Diagnose. We find the actual cause and show you what we found.
  3. Options before work. Repair vs replace, explained plainly. Nothing starts until you say go.
  4. Fixed to code. Permit and inspection handled where required, and the work area left clean.

Garbage Disposal Repair & Replacement: common questions

Is it worth repairing a garbage disposal?

Jams, resets and loose connections are worth fixing. Leaks from the body of the unit usually mean replacement.

Can a disposal cause my kitchen sink to clog?

Yes. Grease, peels and starchy food can build up in the drain beyond the disposal. See drain cleaning.

Why does my disposal leak when the dishwasher runs?

Often the dishwasher drain hose connection at the disposal is loose, or the knockout or air gap isn’t set up correctly.

Why won’t my disposal turn on at all?

Check the red reset button on the bottom, then the wall switch and breaker. If it’s plugged in under the sink, make sure the outlet has power.
