Drain Cleaning & Clog Removal in Overland Park, KS
One slow sink is usually a local clog. Several fixtures backing up at once, gurgling toilets, or water coming up in a floor drain point to the main line. We figure out which it is before we start, because the fix is different.

Common drain problems we clear
- Kitchen sinks: grease, food waste and disposal debris
- Bathroom sinks, tubs and showers: hair and soap buildup
- Toilets that clog repeatedly
- Laundry standpipes that overflow during the drain cycle
- Floor drains and basement drains backing up
- Main sewer line clogs (often roots, grease or a sagging section of pipe)
Which drain is it? A quick guide
| What you see | Likely location | What to do now |
|---|---|---|
| One sink or tub is slow; everything else drains | That fixture’s trap or branch line | Clean the stopper or strainer; avoid chemical cleaners |
| Kitchen sink backs up when the dishwasher runs | Kitchen branch line (grease, food) or disposal outlet | Stop running the dishwasher; don’t keep running the disposal |
| Washer drain overflows the standpipe | Laundry branch line (lint, soap) or the main | Pause laundry; check whether other drains are also slow |
| Toilet flush makes the tub gurgle or a floor drain rise | Main building drain or sewer lateral | Stop using water in the house and call |
| Basement floor drain backs up during heavy rain | Could be the lateral, or the public sewer overloaded | Call a plumber; if the public main is the cause, JCW has a backup program |
How we approach a clog
Branch lines are usually cleared with a cable machine sized for the pipe. For main-line backups we clear the line first to get you running, then recommend a camera inspection if the problem keeps coming back or the cause isn’t obvious. A camera tells you whether you’re dealing with roots, a belly, a broken section or simply buildup.
We don’t recommend caustic drain chemicals. They rarely clear a real blockage, can damage older pipes, and make the work hazardous for whoever opens the line next.

Cleanouts: the access point that saves time
A cleanout is a capped fitting that gives direct access to the drain line. Johnson County Wastewater notes they’re typically found in the yard, the basement or a crawl space (JCW). Keep it accessible and capped: an uncapped cleanout lets rainwater into the sewer, which JCW counts as a source of private inflow. If your home has no usable cleanout, adding one can make future cleanings faster and cheaper.

When a clog is really a sewer problem
If the same main-line clog returns every few months, cleaning is treating a symptom. Roots re-enter through joints, and low spots collect waste. That’s when a sewer line repair conversation makes sense, backed by camera footage you can see yourself.
House age is a useful clue. Census data puts the median Overland Park home at 1989, but that hides a wide spread: ZIP 66204 in north OP has a median of 1965 with 40.8% of homes built before 1960, while 66221 in south OP has a median of 2007. Older laterals are more likely to be clay or cast iron with joints roots can get into. See who owns the sewer lateral for what that means for repairs.

Keeping drains clear
- Wipe greasy pans into the trash before washing; grease hardens in the line even when it goes down hot
- Use strainers in tubs and showers and empty them often
- “Flushable” wipes don’t break down like toilet paper; they’re a common cause of main-line clogs
- Run plenty of water with the disposal and keep fibrous peels out
- If one line clogs over and over, ask for a camera look rather than repeat cleanings
What affects the cost
- Which line is clogged (branch line vs main)
- Access: a usable cleanout vs pulling a toilet
- Whether a camera inspection is needed
How it works
- Call or book. We help you stop the water first if needed, then give you an arrival window.
- Diagnose. We find the actual cause and show you what we found.
- Options before work. Repair vs replace, explained plainly. Nothing starts until you say go.
- Fixed to code. Permit and inspection handled where required, and the work area left clean.
Drain Cleaning & Clog Removal: common questions
Why do my drains gurgle when the washing machine drains?
Gurgling usually means air is being pulled through a trap because the line downstream is partly blocked or a vent is obstructed. If several fixtures react at once, the main line is the likely culprit.
Are store-bought drain cleaners safe for my pipes?
We don’t recommend them. They seldom clear a real blockage, can harm older pipes and fixtures, and are a burn hazard when the line is opened later.
How do I know if it’s the main sewer line?
Signs include multiple fixtures backing up at once, water appearing in a floor drain or tub when a toilet is flushed, and sewage odors. Call before using more water.
Who do I call if sewage is backing up into my basement?
A plumber can diagnose it. In the Johnson County Wastewater area, a backup in the main drain or several fixtures at once may be a sewer backup, and JCW also takes calls at 913-715-8600. During heavy rain JCW answers calls in the order received.
Do I need a permit for drain cleaning?
No. Overland Park’s code exempts clearing stoppages. If the line has to be dug up and pipe replaced, that becomes permitted work.
