Repair or replace?
Many drips are a worn cartridge or seal and can be repaired if parts are available. A corroded body, a discontinued model or a finish you’re tired of are good reasons to replace. When we replace a faucet we also check the shutoff valves under the sink: old multi-turn stops often fail when they’re finally used.
Shower valves and scald protection
Modern shower valves are pressure-balancing or thermostatic, which keeps the temperature steady when someone flushes a toilet or starts the dishwasher. If your shower spikes hot or cold, the valve’s cartridge may be worn or the home may have an older non-balancing valve. Replacing a valve body means opening the wall behind it (or using an access panel), so it’s worth planning with any bathroom update.

Fixture tips for local homes
WaterOne’s 2026 Water Quality Report lists average total hardness of 135 ppm (range 110–157), about 7.9 grains per gallon. The City of Olathe’s 2025 report lists 150 mg/L, about 8.8 grains per gallon. Both fall in the U.S. Geological Survey’s “hard” range of 121–180 mg/L: enough to build scale in tanks, tankless heat exchangers, valves and aerators over a few years.
Mineral deposits shorten cartridge life and clog aerators and showerheads. Unscrewing and soaking aerators in vinegar every few months helps. If scale is a constant fight, ask about water treatment options.
Outdoor faucets: before the first freeze, disconnect hoses so frost-free hose bibbs can drain, as WaterOne recommends. A hose left on is the most common reason a frost-free bibb splits inside the wall.

Faucet, Sink & Fixture Installation: common questions
Why does my new faucet have low flow?
Debris loosened during installation often lodges in the aerator or cartridge screen. Cleaning it usually restores flow. Old, partially closed shutoff valves are another common cause.
Should I replace my shutoff valves when I replace a faucet?
If they’re old multi-turn valves, it’s usually worth it. They tend to seize or leak when finally turned, and it’s easiest to replace them while the faucet is out.
Why is there white crust on my faucets and showerhead?
Mineral scale from hard water. WaterOne and Olathe water both test in the hard range. Vinegar soaks remove it from aerators and showerheads.
My shower goes cold when someone flushes. Can that be fixed?
Usually. A worn pressure-balancing cartridge can be replaced; an older valve without pressure balancing may need a new valve body.
